approx. 5 min.  An adaptation of a piece originally written for septet and recorded on the album Justin Morell Septet.  This slow, relaxed swing piece recalls aspects of blues and film noir.  It isn’t a technically challenging piece, with two exceptions: first, it must remain extremely laid back throughout, to the point that the melodic lines should fall a half-beat behind the rhythm section; second, there are a few moments in the tenor 1 and flugel 3 parts that are in an unusually high register—not extreme, but beyond what is typical.  These are deliberately written to sound like they are just stretching outside the limits of what feels comfortable.  The performers should lean into that sensation rather than try to cover it up.

Solo changes appear in many different parts along the way and can be used for individual soloists or group improvisation.

Instrumentation: [5, 4, 4, 4] trumpets 3 & 4 double flugelhorn.
