Approx. 10 minutes. Sun Subtle is composed for 5/4/4/4 jazz orchestra. The first solo can be opened up for several players. Additional solos are for soprano 2 and trumpet 2 (in dialog with the ensemble). This is an adaptation of a piece originally recorded on the album Justin Morell Dectet — Subjects and Complements.
The dynamic marking “m” is used throughout to indicate “mezzo”, or medium volume, in place of the more typical “mf” and “mp”.
Instrumentation: [5, 4, 4, 4] soprano, alto (doubles flute), 2 tenor, baritone saxophones; trumpets double flugelhorn.
