Winner of the Danish Radio Thad Jones Composition Competition, Third Place, this piece is medium up-tempo swing with lots of section playing. Begins with a saxophone section feature. This piece is intended to be an exposition of somewhat traditional large ensemble writing with a more modern harmonic and melodic language. Score and parts: $75.00
Instrumentation:
This piece is in a modified rondo form in which each new subsection is a variation on the 'A' section, with a large lyrical interruption in the middle. The music is fully composed with no improvisation, incuding a written out drum set part. Tempo is medium slow. Score and parts: $75.00
Instrumentation:
Written for a performance with trumpeter Ron Miles, this piece is a slow melodic trumpet feature with a wide open improvisational section. Score and parts: $60.00
Instrumentation:
This piece begins with a chamber subset of the band (piano, guitar, and bass) playing the opening head, followed by a double-time feel full orchestration and development. A tenor solo occupies the middle of the piece. The piece closes with a return to the opening chamber ensemble. In addition to featuring the tenor player, the chart gives much of the main melodic material to the bass and piano. Tempo is a meduim waltz (against the double time feel). Score and parts: $60.00
Instrumentation:
This chart is a modern take on the classic Basie-style laid-back kind of section playing. A guitar ostinato anchors much of the piece. The fisrt tenor player is featured, a short shout section brings the piece to its climax, and the closing head is a contrapuntal development of the melody. Score and parts: $60.00
Instrumentation:
A very fast tempo jazz feel over a pedal point make up the main portion of this piece. The melody is played by the guitar in contrapuntal converstion with the saxophone and trumpet. A second guitar part can be used in place of or in addition to the piano part. The piano takes the first solo in a completely open improvisational section followed by a long slow build with backgrounds. A guitar solo follows. Score and parts: $60.00
Instrumentation:
This straight-eighth piece in 5/4 is built around an ostinato against which different rhythmic groupings are juxtaposed (based upon the composition "Dave's Riddle" from the CD triOrange). It's a challenging read, but accessible to listen to. Solos are given to the guitar and the flugelhorn, the latter of which alternates between improvisation and a series of responses by the ensemble. Score and parts: $75.00
Instrumentation:
A slow jazz-feel waltz, this piece begins with a lightly scored homophonic ensemble section which grows into a fully scored texture. The opening head never returns; rather, the soprano solos from the middle of the piece throughout a long build and to a slow fade. Score and parts: $60.00

In some cases, a tenor saxophone can substitute for the bass clarinet, but consult the score for range issues. Almost all of these charts were recorded on the CD "Septet", which is available for free download on another page of the web site. Follow the links to the left (for the "Septet" CD purchase) to get to the free downloads not otherwise included here.
